Kerala's backwaters are best experienced in the quiet hours before the world wakes up. Board a traditional wooden kettu vallam (rice boat) as the sky turns pink and the coconut palms are mirrored perfectly in still water.
Your boat weaves through narrow canals, past fishing villages where nets are already being cast, and through open lakes where egrets stand motionless in the morning light. A freshly prepared breakfast of appam and fish curry is served on deck as you drift.
The return journey follows a different route to maximise what you see — the full circuit covers over 15 km of interconnected waterways, each with its own character.
